A whole lot of art shows

A few shows to tell you about this Christmas season. I won't be at the One of a Kind show selling my wares this year, sad I know but I have a couple other things going on.
If you live in St.Catharines, Brock University's visual arts department has an annual art auction to help raise money for scholarships and other community events. The event is called "pARTners for change" and it happens at Rise Above Bakery Cafe at 120 St.Paul and it is on December 2nd at 7pm. I will have two pieces in the show so you may get yourself a good deal.

Next is a group show in Toronto at the brand new MJG Gallery owned by the talented artist and photographer Mark Gleberzon, the show opens December 8th and will run for 2 weeks at 555 Parliament Ave. There I will have a few of my own hero's from my Little Creature series.

Last of all is the annual Gallery 44 Photography show called Wall to Wall, it is the big annual fundraiser and always a great time. I will have a couple pieces for sale in this show as well so stop by 401 Richmond Street on December 1st from 6-9pm but the show continues until Dec 10th so you have lots of time to pick something up.

Well one show is over and another one is upcoming. The show at the Niagara Artists Centre went really well, I sold a few pieces and had a number of friends out to see the show during the run and at the closing, thanks for your support. I really enjoyed working on those pieces, so I am happy they were well recieved. I am now off for a week to bike and camp in Vermont so that should allow me a chance to do quite a bit of photography while I am away I hope, I hear it is beautiful there.

On my return I will be in this show put on by the Pumphouse Gallery In Niagara On the Lake , Ontario. This is an annual show full of a diverse group of talented Niagara based artist so it's really worth seeing. This year it runs three days July 30th, 31st and August 1st, there will be extensive local advertising in The St.Catharines Standard, CKTB radio station and in Arabella magazine, so look out for it.

Postcards from Havana-show opens at the Nac

This coming Saturday I will have a show opening with images from Cuba at the Niagara Artists Centre. I had a small selection of these at the Riverdale Art Walk but have continued with the series.

I shot quite a bit in my short time there and hadn't spent much time looking at all the images until recently. I discovered quite a few I liked and decided to spend some time processing them and giving them the look and feel I thought being in old Havana imparting on them.

I will have a few new images printed larger on plywood, some panel mounted 11x14 and 16x20 and a few small ones of just doors. The show will be up two weeks with a closing on July 8th at 8pm.

The closing will be a double bill with the preview of the main space exhibit of Faye Mullen's work. She is a Niagara based artist who has had quite a lot of exposure in Toronto. I first saw Faye's work at The Artist project in 2010 that was called "I'm an artist and I weigh" where she compared individuals by photographing them next to the equal weight of something they chose or somehow identified with. It was a great show and I just love the work I have seen of hers and am really looking forward to her exhibition that will run for 3 months.

I, like many of you read blogs, magazines and watch TV. Time wasters maybe but as far as I'm concerned it all leads to what inspires us to do the things we do. And to do it better, different and more originally. Sometimes I don't want to be influenced and I just want to create in my own little bubble but I doubt that is entirely possible. It's amazing at the places you find your inspiration however simple. These are some of artists that inspire me. I really started to see a trend in my tastes as I selected images. I will continue this with other mediums and people in future weeks.

Well as a photographer you'd think I may snap a pic or two of my booth at the Riverdale Art Walk, the event, my work, the weekend, hell no. It was a great success for me with many pieces sold and some new clients and fans.

I do have some images of some new little photo encaustic paintings I did for the show. Some sold which was great because it's still relatively new to me and I am always cautious how new work will be regarded, fortunately they went over well but there are a few left for sale.

I'll put them up at the Jordan Art Gallery in the next couple days or you can direct message me if you want one info@tansy.ca. Each painting is 4x6 inches and just over 1 inch thick, they can hang or sit, each one is $110 plus tax. I can ship to you as well. I will be doing more of these little painting in the bird and tree series. I am currently working on some bigger encaustic painting in another series using vintage family photos.

13th annual Riverdale Art Walk June 4 & 5th

I have an upcoming show in June, first time for me at this one and my only Toronto show at the moment. I will be in Jimmy Simpson park booth 117 right on Queen Street. There is also a variety of artists in various shops and store fronts that you can visit with a self directed tour.

I was planning to show some images I shot in Havana Cuba in December of 2009 that I haven't shown before. I have been working on the color to get the right feel for the time and place. This is just a sampling of some of the new prints that will be available. Most of this work will mounted to panels with and epoxy coating as well as some larger pieces direct printed on plywood.

The rain that is, the grass is green enough!! My garden is growing like crazy, so are the weeds but it's just too darn cold to get into gardening despite my proclamation to start earlier this year. (recall the list)

So for a much needed change I was off to Ottawa, the nations Capital for 4 days of R&R and hopefully some sun. We make an annual trip each spring and we always forget just how much we love it there.
I got a couple days of sun before the rain set in but I was less mobile to run around and take pictures because I sprained my ankle within minutes of waking up on my first day just getting out of bed, yes welcome to my life.

My dear friend Di fortunately for me has an electric bike, wow what fun it is to Scoot as she calls it, I am now officially addicted....may have to get me one of these.

She managed to take me to a lovely little grove of Magnolia trees where I snapped a few first pictures of spring...ahh. Including varieties I'd never seen before, like the lime green ones!
Good thing because when I got back home all the Magnolias were finished due to all the rain.

The rest of the trip was spent doing Yoga for the mobile-ly impaired at her beautiful new Yoga studio, eating perfectly balanced meals (thanks to the lovely Kylie of The Nourished Self), scooting around the market with my camera, chatting and just relaxing with friends...all good.
Now back to the rain and my wet garden.

The sun peeked it's little face out today for the first time in awhile, I can only hope it sticks around because as far as I know I didn't relocate to Vancouver and that is what it has felt like lately, too much rain! So with the nice weather upon us (fingers crossed) show season has begun! I won't be doing many show this year so don't miss it.

I am doing a sweet little show this coming Mothers Day weekend here in Niagara. Beamsville to be exact at The Good Earth Food and Wine, called The Handmade Market. They will have a small artisan show of about 20 vendors, from body to clothing to home items. You can book lunch for mom (call to reserve), try some the delicious wine ( don't miss the Rose) and do a little shopping too.

What will Tansy & Co have for you, well great deals for one, I have lots of items on sale, from my mini candle lanterns for $20, limited selection, Table lamps at 30% off, clocks and coasters and jewelry too.

Niagara is a wonderful place to visit in the spring so come meander through wine country, maybe bring your bike.... and bring your camera too.

The Simplicity of Type (an ode to spring forthcoming)

What I want to be posting is oodles of my photos of lovely spring blossoms bathing in rich sunlight, beautiful vignettes of pots of flowers in my home with the light streaming in the window. Well mother nature does not agree and we are weeks behind. So for now just an ode to the simplicity of type, the pureness of form, the sweet serif, the roominess of blank space. Almost as beautiful as flowers.

The top one is my current favourite and I plan to purchase some of her adorable and original letter press cards by Sapling press.

I paint too ya know

The paint pallet

No I can't exactly say that is true. I learned from my sister how to do some encaustic painting and did a couple workshops and experimental painting days with her. She is a very accomplished painter and is so talented in her art, me not so much. But i do love it, it is highly addictive and encaustic is very forgiving. Just melt away your mistakes..oh if only that were true in life.

So finally after much ado, I have set up studio, mixed my paints and got back at it. I know I will be doing more of this because it's just such a nice change from the other things I do. I am mastering the photo transfer process but I have also just collaged my photography into the pieces.

Here is the piece I have been working on called " I seem to recall". Inspired by my mom using images and memories of her. This is a series I will definitely be expanding on.

It will be available at the art sale fundraiser for the Niagara Artists Centre called "Small Feats" this Saturday April 2nd. Maybe you can come? There will be lots of work to choose from and each piece is only $200.00, a fantastic deal to own some really original work by Niagara artists.

2010 Spring in Niagara

Lists. love em hate em, we all make them, or do we? I guess I am a regular list maker, keeps me on track and now getting older, keeps me from forgetting everything two minutes later. So here goes the list I've been working on..I'll call it the "Spring to do list" but really it's last springs to do list and last winters carried over but I never give up the good fight that some of these things will actually get done THIS spring.

1. Use my Lomo Camera more

4. Do taxes-yes more than one year-yes I'm an artist we procrastinate

Glorious Beautiful Spring...is upon us

Walking my backyard for the first time to see what is coming up makes me giddy. Not enough to photograph yet so I am posting photos from spring past.

I am also using a fun new application that is like making your personal inspiration board public for your friends and fans to see. It called Pinterest and it's highly addictive like all social media. I'll be pinning away this spring...and summer.

Spring gives me new energy, I want to clean, rearrange, redecorate, fill my house with flowers and cook. Here a photo collage to get you in the spring mood. This yummy Nutella Croissant was one of the images I saw on someone else's pin board and now I must go make this!

My happy thought for today? The one thing that makes me happy every time I look at him...my handsome boy Sigmond, our tuxedo cat. We lost our other dear boy Harry almost 3 weeks ago and it's been very hard and sad but this sweet face always makes me smile. Siggy misses him too.

Listen, we all hate these grey days, me especially. I cannot wait until spring's warmth and sun arrives so I can stop moping around the house without a lick of energy. So I decided I had to think of one good thing a day, however small that puts a smile on my face. This is todays...a fresh juicy orange and a delicious cup o joe....it's the simple things.

Parting words - The Artist Project 2011

Invigorated, exhausted, motivated, inspired...only a few words to describe the experience. The show is chalk a block with 200 artists and I have no idea how many pieces of art. I feel like I have the stamina and experience to see a show like that and distil what I like but really no one does, it is overwhelming.

If I had a couple thousand to spend I don't know how I would decide.
Some artists made out like bandits looking like they sold everything in their booths, others lost their shirts. It's a competitive place as the art world is and you have to keep your chin up and believe in what you are doing.
I have been working on my craft for over 20 years, sometimes full time, sometimes part time but I have always stuck with it one way or another, no matter what I will always be making images.

I am happy to have sold some of the new pieces that I printed on plywood, the new color work really got a lot of attention and great comments and hopefully a few new fans to my photography. Often for an artist, sales come after the show once potential clients go through the cards they have collected and start weeding through the artist web sites to make final decisions.

It was also quite amazing to see my images blown up wall sized in the show as part of the promotions. My work was included in the print advertising, art talks on Friday and the show tour on Saturday, so many thanks to the show for all their support and promotion.

The Artist Project Toronto

What I look forward to as much as being part of this upcoming exhibition is seeing the work of my fellow artists.

In particular I really enjoy the work of the younger emerging artists, the area of the show called "Untapped". I was so inspired and amazed by the creativity and freshness of last years artists, looks like this year proves the same.

One of the artists this year Lisa Borin is a mixed media artist working in the sensory realm. Her installation of silver mobiles are beautiful and etherial.

Ceramic artist Aislinn Caron is doing some incredible work and I've never seen anything like them before. Both natural and organic yet constructed and rigid, it is a wonderful marriage of form and structure.

Philip Delisle is a painter with an interesting vantage point, he paints himself painting himself...and so on. His works are self portraits of a sort without the usual ego attached, an allegory to world in which is involved, a little tongue and cheek one thinks. His detail is soft and rounder almost animated, I also really like the softer colours he uses.

The Artist Project runs March 3rd-6th at the Queen Elizabeth building in Toronto.

Hello I'm back...well sort of

Well I took a couple months off for personal reasons but am starting to get back in the game. Starting this Thursday March 3rd until Sunday March 6th 2011 I will have a booth at The Artist Project in Toronto. 200 juried artists in all media will show their newest works. Along with talks by a myriad of experts, some really exciting work by emerging artists and a themed competition it is sure to inspire and engage. I'm in booth #824 and I look forward to meeting you all. The nice people at TAP used one of my new images in the advertising campaign. It's part of a series I've called "Witness" more on that to come...

There will lots of new updates in the weeks to come on new work, future plans and sales!

Support that sustains me

It is especially this time of year when we turn our minds as well as our time to our families. It's been an introspective fews weeks for me.

I have a very dear and wonderful little cat we call Harry that is quite sick but not very old who may not live much longer and it seems so unfair. As well I have a business I love but does not fully support me of which I have decided I will need to move on from.

And now I have a mother who has had an serious fall and at 90 likely does not have a lot of time left. Any one event would be a lot of any person to handle but all three at once is more than one should bear.

It has brought to my attention the love and friendship I have in my life. It has also shown me people see much strength, creativity and ability in me to move forward and that helps to sustain anyone in a time of need.

I don't yet know what the New Year will bring and I am not eager to get there yet. There are many days ahead of sadness and upheaval which is as always part of life, however unwelcome.

I will continue to think and grow and decide what is next both personally and professionally. Thank you for supporting me.

So happy to be home with my hubby and kitty's and my own bed. It was a great 11 days at the One of a Kind show once again this year although slower for me than last year.

Customers were definitely fans but price point conscious and with nothing in the $30 price point it was noticeable. Funny as last year was more deep recession than this year but I guess that is catching up with folks.

I offered some new wares that went over well, a multi use hook board with a glass photo tile, a new 2011 calendar which I still have some left over and they will be on my Etsy shop by the weekend, all new images on the desk clocks and some stunning new lampshades on organza!

Some of the big one of a kind pieces sold right away which was great but I still have some lamp shades left over if you are looking for a special light as a focal point for your home. Like the Orchid table lamp pictured below, offered on a handcrafted wooden base now in round or square dark or light wood.

They will all be posted on the Etsy site really soon. I will also be clearing out the pillows as I have decided to take a break from those so keep posted for a sale! I have my solid cotton cases with big bolder photos and some of the newer natural linen styles in the 12x18 size.

All in all a good show with some happy customers, thanks for coming out to support handmade Indy artists like myself.

As I prepare for the One of a Kind show coming up I am always thinking of new ideas just before the show. My little creature blocks are always so popular I wanted to add a few new designs.

Not only will you meet about a dozen new characters at the show, you will also be able to buy them as a long block series. I have done up a few different combinations of the popular creatures mounted to 4 x 12 and 3 x 12 handmade raised oak panels, very limited editions!!

STRUTT Niagara's best and only wearable art fashion show

I must admit I've been a little preoccupied lately with this event. I am on the board of nac.org the Niagara Artists Center, and on the organizing committee of the event. Nac is a really great place that has been around for many years supporting the arts community in Niagara with events and exhibitions to make people talk and think.

They have this fundraising event every year and now it is in it's 11th year. Artists from around Ontario, mostly Southern Ontario submit wearable art designs to be modeled down the runway. It's edgy, humorous and extremely well executed. So if you have never been before it's not too late. The event is November 19th door at 8pm, tickets range $20.00 for students to $50.00 for the curators row. Plus there are corporate tables of four and eight with front row seats, wine and food....call The Center for the Art's box office 905 688-5550 x 3257 This year it will be held in the Market at Brock University, you really don't want to miss this.

A Mano Libera Gallery Exhibition

I will be in a group show in St.Catharines at A Mano Libera Gallery, which opens October 15th and runs until November 21st. The show is a collection from 12 local photographers in a variety of styles. It opens concurrently with James Street Night of Art which is a annual event in the city under the helm of the St.Catharines Arts Council that has been building a few years now.

I look forward to showing my work in this beautiful gallery and I hope you can attend. The gallery hours are limited to weekends only so be sure to check the web.

IIDEX 2010 and the The Artist Project 2011

IIDEX happened this past week in Toronto. IIDEX/NeoCon is Canada's Design Expo and Conference for the Design and Construction Trades. As it is the sister show to IDS and The Artist Project they have a booth there to represent those shows. I was asked to feature a couple of my pieces in the booth which got a lot of exposure over the three days. Here is a few images of the booth I was in.

Nuit Blanche will take place on Saturday October 2nd and if you've never been...GO. It is an all night extravaganza of art is all forms, something to be experienced.

This year they are having a retrospective show now that Nuit is on it's 5th year to showcase some of the work performed or seen in the last four years. This takes place at the Scotia Bank Plaza King Street West in Toronto. This exhibit includes images, video and pieces from the past years. I was lucky enough to have a couple of my images chosen to be part of the display from my attendance at Nuit in 2008. Square foot show ends soon

I completely for got to post an entry about Square Foot this Year. This is an annual art show where all of the pieces are 12x12 inches and are $250.00 each. You have work from emerging to well known artist but you don't really know until you buy your piece. It is held at AWOL gallery 100A Ossington Avenue in Toronto 2nd floor. But you do still have a few more days to catch the show and you should. I entered 3 pieces into the show this year which may or may not have sold, fingers crossed!

SCOTIA BANK NUIT BLANCHE

Some exciting news to report. The kind folks at Nuit Blanche have selected two of my images I shot of past Nuit Blanche events to exhibit in their retrospective show.

Nuit Blanche if you don't know is all night art lovers extravaganza. From performance art to fine art to improv to major multi media events its all there and it happens in Toronto on October 2nd. The fun part is it goes all night long so get rested because there is a lot to see. The hours are 6:57pm to sunrise.

The show I am part of will be happening in the Scotia Bank Plaza and will include a number of images of past event, videos and some past years exhibits.

Judging by the web site and the media I have read so far it promised to be another great year. And did I mention it's all free! Check it out Here.

Grimsby Art Gallery 2010 Biennial Juried Exhibition

July 23 – August 22

Opening reception Friday July 23 7 – 9 p.m.

Every two years the Grimsby Public Art Gallery hosts a juried exhibition to showcase new works by artists from across Ontario. Around 250 entries were received from close to 100 artists and from these the three jurors, selected 41 pieces by 35 different artists, which will be on display in the Main Gallery from July 23^rd to August 22^nd. I am pleased to say I was one of the artist chosen this year for the exhibition. The piece chosen was a new image I made earlier this year entitles FLOW and is printed on aluminum.

The jurors for our 2010 exhibition were Zhe Gu, the Director of Gallery Stratford, Tor Lukasic-Foss, artist, writer and musician from Hamilton and David Taylor, now retired but formerly Curator of Gallery Lambton in Sarnia.

As well as selecting the artwork, these arts professionals have decided which three pieces are of such significant merit that they will be awarded the cash prizes that have been generously sponsored by local businesses – the first prize Canadian Tire Store Award; the second prize NRB Inc Award and the third prize Coles Florist Award. A new award, the Special Effects Art Shoppe Award to a Regional Artist is offered for the first time this year. These four awards will be presented at the opening reception on July 23^rd. During the month that the exhibition is on display visitors will be able to vote for their favorite work of art; the winner will receive the Viewer’s Choice Award, to be announced at the end of the exhibition.

The show will run for one month, I hope you will make it down to see the work.

The St.Catharines annual juried show is now on display on the 2nd floor of City Hall 50 Church street. The exhibition is titled Shoot High! Go Low! Arts and Sports in St.Catharines and it reflects the artists relationship to all areas and disciplines of sport. The exhibit is up until August 13th.

I will be exhibiting some of my works on metal this month at PAN cafe in downtown St.Catharines on St.Paul street. I will have a few new pieces for the show and some smaller affordable framed works as well.

Pan is a healthy natural organic oriented cafe with great comfort food using local ingredients. Bright and sunny and right downtown it is a great place to have lunch and enjoy the art at the same time. The show will be up this Saturday May 1 to the 30th. Niagara's 2nd annual homegrown music and arts festival is on again for about 10 days. I am one of the photographers for the event so that means I get to see lots of great talent, stay up way past my bedtime and drink more beer than is wise..but hey it has to be done right.
Here is a sample of a couple of the events so far. I hope this will become a huge event in the years to come and a draw for visitors, culture lovers and tourists to the region. Check out the In the Soil web site, there is still plenty of time to catch some of the fun....come on get dirty!!

Wholesale orders are burying me.....but I am coming out of the pile and will begin to ship this week. That means a few things. One lots of stores will have Tansy stock soon. Two I will be able to start working on some new design ideas. Three I will have some free time to create some new art. Laura Sabia Award

I was asked to create the Laura Sabia award given to this years recipient Rosemary Hale, Dean of Humanities and a professor at Brock in the department of history. It was an honor to be asked to make the award for Dr.Hale.

The award recognizes a woman in the Niagara Community who has made an outstanding commitment to the arts and furthered the careers of women artists.

The piece I gave her was actually made almost 20 years ago. It is called "Trois Oeuf" and it is a still life of eggs that was made as a Palladium print, a old process using hand coated emulsion that uses Palladium metals rather than silver gelatin used in tradition photographic prints. It was from an edition of two so it is a special piece . The eggs represented new beginnings, something Rosemary has given her students and the artists she has helped, she is also a passionate gourmet so I felt it was an appropriate choice. Congratulations to Dr.Hale for your tireless support in working to bring the Arts Centre to downtown St.Catharines.

Metal Giant

The The Artist Project Toronto has wrapped up for another year and what fun it was but I am truly exhausted talking to so many interested people. Metal Giant was on display at the show, it hasn't gone home with anyone yet.... It is 40x60 inches and is printed on aluminum. It is beautiful in person, grand and imposing with hidden details only the aluminum can reveal. Please contact me if you would like to view this piece for your home or office.

Well it is almost here The Artist Project show opens in Toronto with a fun filled gala on Thursday March 4th from 7-10pm and runs three full days for the public to come, view buy, support and be inspired. This is my first large scale Toronto Fine Art exhibition of my photography. I have exhibited my fine craft at the One of a Kind Show and my lighting designs at the IDS09 show but this is all new. I have been slowly moving towards more fine art and lighting design these last few years and this is the perfect place to showcase that work. I have been working on my Little Creatures series with this new addition. Although it is part of the series it is a little different than the others, I have never used a sports toy before mostly kid toys. The reason being is this is a submission for The City of St. Catharine's annual juried show. The theme this year is "Shoot High-Go Low", the merge of art and sports. To be honest the subject didn't strike me at all until I decided to stick with something I knew. So this is my take on the subject. This is isn't the official selection, that will be a surprise but you get the idea. Go Vader Go!

Well the winter blahs are upon us but I can't slow down and melt into the couch as I have so much work to do. The gift show went well and I have over 20 new shops that will soon be selling my works. I have also freshly stocked a few of my consignment galleries as well like Artist Walk in Burlington with new lighting and aluminum clocks.
Best news yet is that Etsy headquarters in Brooklyn just order barrel lamp shades to decorate their office/showroom, how cool is that.
Here is a an new image to keep the winter blues away, it is also an image that is up for auction as part of the Heart to Heart art sale at the Jordan Art Gallery with proceeds going to The Heart and Stroke foundation of Ontario.

The partners at the Jordan Art Gallery are having a silent auction for the month of February. We are calling it "Heart to Heart" The works will be unveiled February 7th with a reception at the gallery from 2-4 pm to preview the work. The bidding will continue in person, by phone and online until the 28th of the month and close at 4pm. Part of the proceeds from the event will go to the Heart and Stroke foundation of Ontario. We will have some other goodies as well to raffle off. This ia great oppourtunity to pick up some possible bargains and help a great cause.

New Show at the Jordan Art Gallery

Happy New Year..first resolution... blog more often! So the plan is to have a consistent weekly blog every Tuesday.
First things first, my current show.
I have an exhibition of works on metal at the Jordan Art Gallery in Jordan Village Ontario.
The show runs Jan 2-30th with the official opening on Saturday January the 16th from 2-4pm. The gallery will be open 10-5pm that day with food and drink in the afternoon so please stop on by.
I have recently joined the gallery as a partner in 2010 and will continue to have ongoing work for show and sale. It is an excellent opportunity to showcase my new bodies of work in silkscreen, encaustic painting and multi media. I do hope you will stop by and say hello to myself or one of my partners.

Hi folks, back from a fun filled trip to the nations capital Ottawa. Had a good show and met some wonderful customers. It was held in the most beautiful building fondly called the "Cattle Castle" a huge glass and wood barn like structure in Landsdown Park.
The show followed with some spa like pampering and of course shopping. Found a great new Eco Fashion shop called Green tree you must visit if ever in Ottawa

But what were people buying in my booth?...well my new adorable little desk clocks were flying. I assume it was the great price of $39.50 packaged in a nice clear gift box ready to give. I will have to make a whole bunch of these for One of Kind show I'm thinkin.

Also my linen bags in lots of new designs now with a longer adjustable strap were a big hit as well!

Back to work heading to Picton for the Makers Hand a wonderful high quality show in the heart of Prince Edward County next weekend. A nice place to come to in the fall, come check out the show, get a jump on Christmas shopping and visit the wineries!

Birds seem to be a constant theme in my work, as well for many artists these days, I am not sure what the appeal is for others but personally I am drawn to their swooping and fluttering forms and their settled calm. I live in farm country with vineyards at all points of the compass so birds tend to be plentiful especially at this time of the year. So I'm pretty sure you'll be seeing alot more of them in my work this fall.

I'm having a show and you are invited. The Niagara Artists Centre (nac) Niagara's longest running artist centres of 40 years no less is hosting my members show. The work I'll be showing is from my Little creatures series but this time I am blowing them up BIG! Well not that big but bigger than the mini blocks I have been selling. This is my first solo art show so it would make me so happy if somebody actually showed up for the opening on August 22 from 3-6pm.

Well it has been a bit busy as of late, putting out wholesale and working on some new ideas for my fall shows. I will have at least 3 new items for sale at my upcoming shows this fall.

I have my fall show schedule confirmed and it will go up on my web site soon. I am also working on several shows that will feature my photography. The first one will be at the Niagara Arts Center NAC in St.Catharines in August for 4 weeks and will feature large 20x20 plywood mounted images from my "Little Creatures" series including some new images.
I have a few gallery shows in the works for 2010 as well so stay tuned for more on that.....

In the meantime

Here is a new image I did this past winter that I just love the feel of...inspired by the work of a wonderful Toronto Photographer Roz Hermant.....it is called " Snow dream" and it was part of St.Catharines Arts City event last week...a new and promising monthly event held in my fair city.

Octopus Project VIII

It is time once again for the next Octopus project group art show at the Distillery District. The show theme or spark is "Free", therefore all of the work on display will be available free through a ballot system. The show opens at 1am Saturday and the artwork is available to be chosen at 3pm so be there to get yours! More info available at http://www.octopusproject.ca/

Doors open Toronto is on at the same time so be sure to get inside Toronto historic buildings this weekend.

This is the piece I am putting in the show. What is more free than birds so I though this would make a lovely themed piece for someone. It is a photo emulsion silkscreen of my image on wood veneer and framed in a box frame, signed and numbered first in an edition of 25. If you would like to order one it is $95.00 framed approx 6x6 and can be framed in black or natural wood.

Print workshop at Bookhou

I had a really great time on Saturday learning to print at a workshop with Arounna of Bookhou. It is always fun to try something new and to create a different vision for your work. I am looking forward to incorporating what I have learned into my current designs. I will soon have some new art work pieces, printed fabric items all using my images but in a high contrast screen printed form.

City of St.Catharines 5th annual juried art show "Escarpment on the Edge"

This Wednesday April 22nd marks the opening of "Escarpment on the Edge". This is a St.Catharines cultural committee juried art event happening at City Hall. The opening is at 4pm and the show will run until July 24th.
Hopefully I can encourage a few of you to get down to Niagara and see the show while it is on.

I was accepted last year with a piece I did called Lost which was an encaustic photo collage that was part of the exhibition entitled Distracted by Abstraction.
I am very pleased to have been accepted again this year with one of my new forest images taken in the Niagara Escarpment called Ghost Trees. I am one of eighteen local artists that explore this theme.

My submission was photographed last fall on a dreamy foggy morning. I have printed the image on sheet aluminum to give it a three dimensional feel, that beckons one into the picture.

It was shown this year at the IDS09 show in Toronto in my booth featuring my lighting and home decor items.

I have been working on a custom lampshade for my clients and they wanted vibrant pink peonies. Luckily I had done some images from the previous spring and that I sort of forgot about. In revisiting the images of my favorite flower in the whole world! I was pulled right in to the memory of their scent and beauty. I thought I would share a couple of the images from the shoot that day. Hopefully with spring feeling like it may be close it won't be long before these beauties are blooming in my garden again. Enjoy the view.

Octopus Project VII: Ladder

Octopus project starts this coming Saturday March 21st, 22nd 2009 11-6 pm both days. The exhibition takes place in the Case Goods building in the Historic Distillery District in Toronto at 55 Mill Street.
The idea started by Catherine Mellinger and Melanie Gordon enrolls a different selection of artists for each show. Each exhibit has a different theme and runs every other month but in the same location. This months theme or "Spark" as they call it is Ladder. I have contributed two photographic pieces to the show from a series of work I have shot of museum and gallery interiors. The two I have chosen are from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Hello, I am blogging from beautiful Victoria BC right now while on holiday visiting family. Not as warm as I had hoped but it is still nice to get away. Hello, I am back from a great week in Philly at the Buyers Market of American Craft, where I picked up some new shops and craft galleries that will be selling my work including the new lighting.

While I was away I was told that my work was featured on a great design blog I love called Apartment Therapy, thanks to those folks for mentioning my work.
Also the blog She does the city featured my custom branch curtain.

In the next few weeks you will be seeing some changes on my web site, more pictures, an updated list of shops and my shows for 2009. All's well that ends well

I want to thank everyone for coming out to see me at the show, it was a great success. The room turned out beautifully and got alot of attention.

The light fixture was a new design specifically for the show and it featured my Niagara Trees image on an organza wrap around shade.
The room also featured my recycled door dining table and wood slice suspention shelf, both created for the space.
Along with my pillows, clocks, table lamps and stunning new metal print.

Table top now painted jet black and oh so glossy. The ceiling unit is cut and ready to prime so happy we came up with that idea. The main feature is the lamp shade and fixture which is in progress. All the props are being pulled together including the chairs I found...I can't wait to see it all completed.
Going to be a surprise even to me to see the big textile art and metal prints being done now. The big unveiling is next weekend...hope to see you there.

New Images for IDS09 booth

The Interior Design show is coming soon and I'm working on many things at once. I have some new images I shot this past fall and they are being printed on aluminum. I can't wait to see the results but here are the original images...should be beautiful. With luck these will be in the booth at IDS09 and for sale through me.

Well the IDS09 show is coming up fast and I have been busy working on the concept for my booth for the show. I am building a table for my dining room setting and I found the perfect old door to work with. I wanted to show the before, during and after shots of the project so you can see what a transformation it will be. This solid wood door has really nice inlaid panels making it a great find. Soon it will be glammed up so stay tuned...

The bird motif seems to be popular again in 2009. People love the simplicity and beauty of birds so I have added a flock to my line available in pillows, coasters, clocks and now pendant lamps. All natural linen totes

You know it isn't like I don't do enough around here but I added these cute tote bags in November to my line. They sold great the One of a Kind Christmas show in Toronto. They are made from all natural unbleached linen fronts, with my images sewen on with an organza overlay, the backs are great designer prints, each one different to complement the front image. This one is called simply "black branch" and will soon be available on my online shopping site. They are fully lined and have a snap or shell button closure and a little inside pocket, perfect for shopping, beaching or a light summer purse.

It's great this network of designing bloggers so many cool blogs out there to read. You will see a few I have mentioned on my page here. Click on them to take you into new and exciting worlds. IDS09 February 7th-8th open to the public

The Interior Design show is the next show I will be appearing at. It is at the Direct Energy Center, at the CNE grounds downtown Toronto, Ontario. The big gala is on Thursday night and the first day is open to the trade only. Then there are two design filled days for you to come by, get ideas, get inspired, place orders and feel all the better for it.
After all good design is good for you!
